New York City
Quel changement depuis mon dernier voyage à New York City. Aussi bien surprenant pour nous, voyageurs du moment que pour les New-yorkais eux mêmes. Cette ville est l’exemple même du développement touristique dans downtown: épaule contre épaule sur le Brooklyn Bridge, des ferrys bondés en direction de la statue de la Liberté ou Ellis Island, la montée de l’Empire State Building, bien organisée à l’américaine… Courage, fuyons et allons nous réfugier dans Harlem, à Brooklyn et assez loin vers Coney Island! Respirons enfin ces quartiers populaires, autour de parcs heureusement méconnus, ou de commerces que l’on pensait disparus. Mais n’oublions pas non plus le coeur de New York, ces quartiers East Side encore peu touchés contrairement à ce West Side peu reconnaissable… et bien sûr cette architecture si singulière.
What a change since my last trip to New York City. It’s just as surprising for us, the travelers of the moment, as it is for New Yorkers themselves. This city is the very epitome of downtown tourism development: shoulder to shoulder on the Brooklyn Bridge, packed ferries heading toward the Statue of Liberty or Ellis Island, the climb up the Empire State Building, all organized in true American style… Come on, let’s escape and take refuge in Harlem, Brooklyn, and all the way out to Coney Island! Let’s finally breathe in these working-class neighborhoods, around parks that are thankfully off the beaten path, or shops we thought had disappeared. But let’s not forget the heart of New York either—those East Side neighborhoods that remain largely untouched, unlike the unrecognizable West Side… and of course, that uniquely distinctive architecture.
