Résidence à l’université de Rennes 2- 2019
Une main délicate tient une photo. Deux autres sont posées sur la nappe brodée blanche. En bord d’image, dans un léger flou, la rondeur du visage soulignée par celle de la perle grise d’une boucle d’oreille introduit le corps de la photographe. Marcelle a 85 ans. Vers 1981, peu après son installation square du Dauphiné, elle a pris ces photos de l’université Rennes 2 vue de son balcon, par-delà l’avenue Gaston Berger. Depuis 1967, elle habitait avenue Winston Churchill. La construction de la ZUP Villejean avait débuté quelques années plus tôt. Le 17 mai 2019, Marc Loyon a passé un moment dans l’appartement de Marcelle. Elle lui a montré ces photos. Mise en abîme d’un projet. Dans le cadre de sa résidence artistique, Marc Loyon souhaitait photographier le quartier de Villejean, l’université implantée depuis 1969, les habitant.e.s et les étudiant.e.s. Tracer un lien, à travers les images, entre les différents lieux d’activités et de vie du quartier : d’un milieu à l’autre.
De 1968 à 1990, Marc Loyon a grandi dans l’un des immeubles de la rue du Bourbonnais qui longe la dalle Kennedy ; le cœur de Villejean ceinturé de blocs d’immeubles. D’octobre 2018 à juin 2019, il est revenu arpenter le quartier. De son expérience de photographe du service de l’inventaire, il a conservé le goût pour la photographie d’architecture qu’il a étendu, depuis 2014, à celle du paysage urbain. Mais ici, pas de méthode ni de protocole de prise de vue systématique dans le but de constituer une typologie d’édifices. À partir des axes que sont le cours Kennedy, l’avenue Gaston Berger, l’avenue Winston Churchill, le boulevard d’Anjou, Marc Loyon n’est pas parti sillonner Villejean comme un territoire à étudier pour en rapporter ce qui est jugé devoir être conservé pour sa valeur patrimoniale. Il s’est émancipé du lexique et de la logique de l’archivage. Il a revisité le quartier avec la mémoire de celui qui a grandi là…

At the edge of the image, slightly blurred, the roundness of the face emphasised by the grey pearl of an earring introduces the photographer’s body. Marcelle is 85 years old. Around 1981, shortly after moving to Square du Dauphiné, she took these photos of Rennes 2 University from her balcony, across Avenue Gaston Berger. She had been living on Avenue Winston Churchill since 1967. Construction of the Villejean ZUP (urban development zone) had begun a few years earlier. On 17 May 2019, Marc Loyon spent some time in Marcelle’s flat. She showed him these photos. A mise en abîme of a project. As part of his artistic residency, Marc Loyon wanted to photograph the Villejean neighbourhood, the university established there since 1969, the residents and the students. He wanted to use images to trace a link between the different places of activity and life in the neighbourhood: from one environment to another.
From 1968 to 1990, Marc Loyon grew up in one of the buildings on Rue du Bourbonnais, which runs alongside the Kennedy slab, the heart of Villejean surrounded by blocks of flats. From October 2018 to June 2019, he returned to explore the neighbourhood. From his experience as a photographer for the inventory department, he retained a taste for architectural photography, which he has extended to urban landscapes since 2014. But here, there is no systematic shooting method or protocol with the aim of creating a typology of buildings. Starting from the main thoroughfares of Cours Kennedy, Avenue Gaston Berger, Avenue Winston Churchill and Boulevard d’Anjou, Marc Loyon did not set out to explore Villejean as a territory to be studied in order to report on what should be preserved for its heritage value. He freed himself from the lexicon and logic of archiving. He revisited the neighbourhood with the memory of someone who grew up there…
