Villa Cavrois et usine familiale à Roubaix.
Roubaix est au début du XXème siècle la capitale de l’industrie textile. La ville possédera même, pendant quelques années, le siège de la bourse mondiale de la laine avant son retour à Sydney. Une grande exposition internationale consacrera en 1911 cette suprématie. Paul Cavrois fait partie des grandes familles du textile du nord de la France, sa fortune le classe en 17ème position parmi les industriels de cette branche. C’est grâce à cette position qu’il pourra attirer Mallet-Stevens dans sa région, en lui demandant de réaliser une villa, plus que provocante pour ses concurrents. Cette rivalité fût plutôt stimulante pour l’économie régionale, et aussi pour la création artistique et architecturale. L’introduction de Robert Mallet-Stevens dans ce milieu, lui permet même d’envisager la réalisation de logements ouvriers pour la lainière de Roubaix. Son attachement au Nord de la France se concrétisa avec sa nomination comme directeur de l’Ecole des Beaux arts de Lille. Roubaix was the capital of the textile industry at the beginning of the 20th century. For a few years, the city even hosted the headquarters of the world wool exchange before it returned to Sydney. A major international exhibition in 1911 celebrated this supremacy. Paul Cavrois was one of the leading textile families in northern France, his fortune ranking him 17th among industrialists in this sector. It was thanks to this position that he was able to attract Mallet-Stevens to the northern region, asking him to design a villa that was more than provocative for his competitors. This rivalry ultimately proved to be rather stimulating for the regional economy, as well as for artistic and architectural creation. Robert Mallet-Stevens’ introduction to this milieu even enabled him to envisage the construction of workers’ housing for the Lainière de Roubaix. His attachment to northern France was cemented with his appointment as director of the École des Beaux-Arts in Lille.
